Indenting a Line or a Paragraph in MS Word 2016

Indenting of a text in MS Word will add structure to the document by letting you separate the information. Whether you like to move a single line or a whole paragraph you can use the tab selector as well as the horizontal ruler for setting tabs and indents. In different types of document you may want to indent only the 1st line of the paragraph which will let you visually separate paragraphs from each other. Indenting by using Tab key:

The quickest way to add indent in a document with the help of Tab key. In order to add indent into a document by Tab key you are required to follow these steps.

  • 1st of all you need to place the insertion point at the beginning of the paragraph which you need to indent.
  • Now press the Tab key. On the ruler you will see the 1st line indent marker. Move to the right side by ½ inch.
  • Now the 1st line of the paragraph will be indented.

Indent Markers

In some scenarios you may want to have more control over indent and for this MS Word provides indent markers which will let you indent paragraphs to the location which you want. These indent markers are located to he left of the horizontal ruler and they provide several different options.

  • 1st Line Indent Marker (Adjusts the 1st line indent.)
  • Hanging Indent Marker (Adjusts the hanging indent)
  • Left Indent Marker (Moves the 1st line indent and hanging indent markers simultaneously)

Indent the Document by using Indent Markers.

  • Place the insertion point anywhere in the paragraph which you like to indent. You can select more than one paragraphs.
  • Now click and then drag the desired indent marker. Here we will click and drag the left indent marker.
  • Now release the mouse and you will see that the paragraph has been indented.
